Simple Tragedy

As a freshman in college returning to the rap scene, I had to reintroduce myself which meant battling dudes any chance I got. It seems men generally underestimate women when it comes to rap. One thing that would frustrate me was how they would laugh before even hearing me. "O you rap lol? Ok lil momma let me hear you."

When the battle was over the very ones who were laughing at me were asking to collaborate. My goal wasn't fame (as you'll hear in the verse) but rapping was more like a sport for me. And I loved to play it.

I start this verse of Simple Tragedy by describing the atmosphere of a battle I did in a truck. Take a listen:

Now that I'm a Christian the experience is a little different.

1. People generally underestimate Christian rappers.

2. People also generally underestimate women who rap.

It's like a double whammy! Plus, this generation is much different than the 90's. There were multiple examples of female rappers in the forefront.

The thing that bothers me as a believer is I still feel women who rap have to prove themselves among Christian men who rap. However, even after we've shown we can hang skill wise, it seems we slowly fade off the scene.

I'm not 100% what it is but women face a unique challenge in the rap game. Why do we begin to slow down and not go as hard? It may be different for each woman.

Motherhood? Discouragement? Lack of resources?

Whatever the reason may be I think the key is to try and stay consistent in today's generation. We are experiencing a whole new era of the music industry. Even the music industry is trying to fugure it out.

I personally don't think we will be taken seriously until we become consistent. If you're a woman who believes God has purposed you to do this, do it wholeheartedly. Regardless if we are encouraged by our peers or not God will reward the diligent. Be encouraged ladies and keep pushing.

Stay tuned for more flashback verses and stories to see where I've grown and where I still struggle. This year I am showcasing many sides of me artistically. Where I come from and where I plan to go. Journey with me and #LookForThe5th
